Stolac and Radimlja Necropolis in Bosnia & Herzegovina

In this episode we visit Stolac, one of the oldest inhabited areas in the Balkans, dating back to 12,000 B.C..

The main attraction is the old fortified town of Stari Grad with the castle ruins. These lands were once owned by Queen Katerina of Bosnia, later her son Herzeg inherited the land and built this castle. Stolac is in the heart of Herzegovina, which in translation means the land of Herzeg.

On the way from Mostar to Stolac is a medieval necropolis called Radimlja. Throughout the country you can find over 60,000 medieval tombstones and with some dating back to the 12 century. The tombstones at Radimlja date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.

Each tombstone depicts the vocation of each person, whether it was a warrior, farmer or noble. The tombstones at Radimlja have all been restored. They now resemble how they originally looked.
