During my trip to South Africa I had the chance to spend over two weeks in the African bush. I visited five different safari camps, four were in Sabi Sands and the Klaserie Nature Reserve. The fifth one is located in the Gondwana Game Reserve. Here are the top 5 safari camps to visit in South Africa.

Umkumbe Safari Lodge is located just outside the iconic Kruger National Park, in the Sabi Sands Private Game Reserve. Umkumbe is considered to be one of the best wildlife viewing regions in all of South Africa. Their incredible lodge boasts 9 rooms offering guests comfort and luxury while still having the real “African” experience. Enjoy air-conditioning, indoor/outdoor bathrooms, full mosquito netting in all rooms, a pool, fitness center and a number of other amenities, plus some amazing outdoor dining and lounge areas with stunning views of the surrounding wildlife.
Africa on Foot in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve just outside of Kruger National Park. A 5-room stay, this boutique camp can accommodate up to 14 people with some excellent living quarters and incredible daily excursions. Africa on Foot can accommodate all sorts of travelers, including families with young children.
Private, specialized walks are available for those who might be too young to enjoy the normal, scheduled walks and drives. One the coolest and most unique outdoor packages, book a stay at Africa on Foot the next time you’re in South Africa for an experience that you’ll never forget!
nDutzi Safari Camp inside the Klaserie Game Reserve is a small four-room (8 person maximum) safari camp, this memorable stay provides guests an intimate safari experience in an untouched corner of the greater Kruger National Park.
Comfortable, personalized rooms and a relaxed lodging atmosphere are balanced by a vast & wild private reserve, where guests can spot some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife. For travelers looking to have a nearly private safari experience in an intimate setting, a stay at the nDutzai Safari Camp in Klaserie Game Reserve is an absolute must!
nThambo Tree Camp in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, an area situated in the heart of the Kruger National Park. The location provides Big Five safaris and walking safaris, offering guests the chance to admire hippos, giraffes, zebras and a variety of birds. nThambo Tree Camp prefers to have an open camp to allow animals to pass through unlike other parks that fence animals out.
Their mission is to bring people closer to nature, which is why it isn’t a mere a “hotel in the bush,” but rather a way to have an authentic bush experience.
Kwena Lodge inside the Gondwana Game Reserve is only 4 hours from Cape Town and a half hour from Mossel Bay, this conveniently located 11,000-hectare reserve is a fantastic place to catch some of the region’s most iconic animals. Kwena Lodge can accommodate all sorts of travelers with their 13 huts (suitable for two) and 13 villas (four to eight people), so no matter what size of group visiting, there’s bound to be room for all.
For those looking to go on safari, Kwena offers game drives (where everything from the Big 5 to Endangered Black Rhinos & Cape Mountain Zebras can be spotted) as well as game walks and junior ranger programs (perfect for children.) With a moderate climate for most of the year, beaches, shark cage diving and other big attractions just nearby, Kwena Lodge/Gondwana Game Reserve is an unforgettable experience and convenient stop off for anyone traveling through South Africa.
