South America’s Finest: The Top Things to Do in Ecuador

Are you heading to Ecuador soon? What should you do when there? Check out this guide to learn about the top things to do in Ecuador.

Did you know that Ecuador is the closest country to space? This crazy cool fact is enough of a reason to visit this unique country! But Ecuador offers so much more. Even though it’s a small country, it offers so much excitement.

There are a ton of things to do — from typical tourist attractions all the way to eyeing the natural beauty. But there are certain activities all travelers must do, regardless of how short or long you’re staying.

If you’re looking for things to do in Ecuador, look no further than this list!

1. Go to the Equator

Ecuador may be small but it’s located in the middle of the world! At least that’s what it translates into in Spanish (“Mitad del Mundo”). In other words, the equator runs through Ecuador. Another fun fact: “Ecuador” means “equator” in Spanish.

You can take a bus ride or a taxi from the La Mariscal neighborhood. Don’t worry, the Mitad del Mundo is properly marked — no compass necessary! Keep in mind, no one really knows where the real equator is.

Scientists discovered the Mitad del Mundo is actually not the correct site of the equator; rather, a space museum called Intiñan Solar Museum is. Now they’re saying this also isn’t the correct location. However, you’re still close to the equator line and pulling the “balancing” act between the Southern and Northern hemispheres is always fun and makes for a great photo!

2. Galapagos Cruise

Everyone needs to witness the Galapagos Islands at least once. This is where Charles Darwin developed the theory of evolution. You’ll witness unique geography and several animal species.

But the question is, what’s the best way to experience the Galapagos Islands? A cruise will take you around each island. You can witness the incredible nature and wildlife while learning about the history.

3. Otavalo Market

Otavalo Market is South America’s largest marketplace. It’s the best place to buy souvenirs, clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Otavalo is a three-hour bus ride from the town of Quito and is worth the trip!

Keep in mind, large crowds can attract thieves and pick-pocketers. Remember these safety tips and don’t keep your cash in your back pocket.

4. Visit Cotopaxi Volcano

Cotopaxi Volcano is one of Ecuador’s major icons. Even though it’s not the tallest volcano (it’s the second-tallest), it has a unique shape with a picture-perfect glacier top. It’s also still active, making it perfect for the thrill-seeker!

Guests can take a tour of the volcano, hike the surrounding area, go bike riding, and do other adventurous activities.

These Things to Do in Ecuador Should Be on Your Bucket List!

From shopping at the market to standing on the equator, there are many things to do in Ecuador. This country is small, which means you can pack these bucket list items into a small trip.
