A Roman Operatic Experience

You don’t need to know your Tosca from your Turandot to be a fan of opera. Even if you have never seen a live performance there are numerous instantly recognisable arias that you hum along with while your imagination runs wild as to how it actually plays out on the stage. Once considered to be only reserved for the cultural elite, opera is now accessible to everyone and you don’t certainly don’t need a second mortgage to grab a couple of Rome opera tickets and experience your favourite opera in magical surroundings – with the amount of competition in travel and tickets, prices are becoming more and more affordable!

As opera has become more accessible it has also become more affordable. It’s now as easy to book a weekend to the Eternal City to take in an opera as it is to go to the Big Smoke to see the latest musical in the West End. Low cost airlines will now get you to Rome for little more than a train ticket to London and with everything else on offer it makes the perfect weekend escape, or midweek break, or anytime getaway. It’s always worth checking out the budget airlines directly as they often have seat sales on which can help you to save even more – I signed up for their mailing lists so I’m first to know of the sales and can get in there first for the best prices!

As you would imagine, there are several places to enjoy the opera in Rome but generally considered to be the crème de la crème is the sumptuous Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. The Rome Opera House first opened its doors in 1880 and it’s world famous stage has been graced by some of the legends of opera getting to grips with some of the most enchanting, and challenging, operas ever written. You will need to be quick to grab one of those prized 1600 seats as they sell out as quickly as any rock band.

Another of the Rome opera houses is St Paul’s Within the Walls which offers the audience an altogether different experience. This opera house is actually a church, which also has the distinction of being the first Anglican church to be built within the Roman city walls. The charm of the sacred surroundings combined with the magic of the music delivers a level of emotion and intensity that cannot be described in mere words, it has to be experienced.
