How did your passion for travel get started?

My family is from Nicaragua. I remember traveling to Nicaragua (from North Carolina) and experiencing a whole new world. I continued visiting during the summer of my middle and high school years. At the same time, I became fascinated with Cuban and French culture (random, I know) and having traveled to Nicaragua I always knew it was possible to travel to other countries too. Years passed and after college, I decided to take my first international trip to Toronto – that trip changed my life. I ended up having a cancelled flight and decided to drive 8 hours from D.C. to Toronto in the middle of the night. Since then, I’ve been itching to experience life by traveling.

What does travel mean to you? Why do you feel it’s important?

To travel means to live. I can die tomorrow, so why not experience everything our planet has to offer while I can? Countries, cities, cultures, food, diversity. Travel is important because it’s one of the main ways you can keep an open mind about other human beings. Travel gives you a worldy view that you can take back home with you to implement in your day to day life.

You run a travel blog called Wynee’s World. Can you please tell us a bit about it? How did it come about? What makes it unique?

Yes! Wynee’s World started after my first trip to Europe. I remember researching things to do for that trip and always landing on blogs and travel guides. That kind of gave me the push to start my own because I was anxious to give MY perspective on the destinations I visited. My blog is unique because I don’t look like the majority of travel bloggers. I am a first-generation Latina who grew up in the South but has had a worldly view since I was young. I am also honest and my audience and readers will ALWAYS know whether I liked something or hated it.

You started traveling in 2016 and haven’t looked back since. What is something you know now that you wish you had known when you first started?

RESEARCH. Compiling a list of what I actually want to see and do, do not trust everything you read and see on the internet (I’ve been so disappointed by restaurants and attractions by not doing this), and to not wait on others to join you!

You’re from Charlotte, North Carolina. What makes Charlotte a great tourist destination? What do you suggest people do there when they visit?

I’m actually from a small town about an hour outside of Charlotte called Forest City. But, living in Charlotte I’ve noticed a growth within the past couple of years. Charlotte is a foodie’s paradise. If you love and care about cuisine, come on down to Charlotte. Charlotte has restaurants galore and some of my favorites are Haberdish, Ely’s Tortilleria, South 21 Jr, and Three Amigos!

How many days/weeks do you travel in any given year? What types of places do you like to visit?

In total, I probably travel around a month to two months total throughout the year. I usually pick a destination based on how cheap flights are for the dates I want to travel.

What do you want audiences to gain and learn from your work?

I want them to learn that I’m honest. I also want them to be inspired to still be able to live a life of travel even if they work a full-time job. Travel for me is more of a lifestyle than a vacation and I hope that my audience gains the confidence to do the same!

What are the top three destinations you’ve visited?

Toronto, Portland (Oregon), and Amsterdam

Give us your ‘Top 5’ list for one of your top 3 destinations. Like a mini-guide or a to-do list of sorts. It can be anything from your favorite hotel, the best place to have lunch, the best sightseeing, etc.

Toronto:

  1. Eat at Pai. Best thai in the city and the Khao Soy is TO DIE FOR.
  2. Go during Caribana (first week or so of August), events and parties are everywhere… such a fun time in the city.
  3. Check out Cabana Pool Bar in the summer, perfect weather & the views of the city are amazing.
  4. Lavelle for pre-game drinks, chill night, and again amazing views of the city.
  5. Get your dose of Poutine. NomNomNom Poutine will not disappoint!

What is your favorite restaurant in the world? What dish do you recommend there?

La Petite Rose des Sables in Paris, France. It’s a hole in the wall spot with 4-5 tables. A grandmother named Mamie serves you throughout the night. She’s friendly, charismatic, and may even give you a shot or 5. She doesn’t let you leave without a picture and without sending you off with gifts. This restaurant is my favorite because it feels like being at a family member’s house. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu!
