6 Free Activities To Enjoy At Fitzroy Island

Fitzroy Island is an idyllic unspoiled tropical paradise that boasts a stretch of lush rainforest and stunning white sand beaches. Found within the calm and sheltered waters of The Great Barrier Reef, this island is home to abundant marine life and local wildlife.

It sits just 45 minutes off the coast of Cairns, Tropical North Queensland and is easily accessible by a regular ferry ride. So whether you’re looking for a tourist spot for an out-of-town trip with the family or a paradise for a romantic couple getaway, Fitzroy Island is the place to be!

There are many accommodation options for you to choose from so you can stay for as long as you wish. But if you’re just looking to unwind and enjoy a picturesque seascape, there are a lot of activities that you can do on Fitzroy Island for free!

Discover Walking Trails

If you’re like us who love to walk while appreciating the beauty of flora and fauna in the surroundings, you’re in the right place!

Fitzroy Island is a National Park that offers bush walking trails throughout the island. Take the Lighthouse and Summit tracks for example. Both will exhaust you so be sure to bring a bottle of water and a reliable leg power. Don’t worry, because the painstaking walk will be rewarded with a breath-taking view of The Great Barrier Reef—one is from an old public lighthouse and the other is from the highest point of the island.

Have Picnic on Nudey Beach

Instead of buying food at the restaurants on the island, bring your own and spread a blanket on the sand for a lovely picnic by the beach! Good food is always best enjoyed with a special someone and a spectacular view of the vast ocean.

Just be mindful of your trash. Don’t leave them on the shore to keep the cleanliness of the beach.

Hang Out With The Marine Life

You’re on one the most pristine beaches of the Tropical Far North Queensland already. So don’t miss out on the beauty under its clear and calm water! Bring out your snorkeling gear and explore the colorful and abundant marine life of the Great Barrier Reef just a few meters from the shore. Underwater cameras are must-haves, too, so don’t forget to bring one!

Feed The Fish

Fish feeding activity is always fun for the kids and kids at heart. Fitzroy Island Resort gives away free fish food to anyone who wants to participate. It happens everyday at 11:30 AM to 4 PM and visitors just can’t get enough of the cuteness of the little swimmers as they wag to the surface of the water to get their treats.

Dance To The Live Music at Foxy’s Tavern

Cap-off your great weekend escapade with good beer and free live music at Foxy’s Tavern! Don’t be shy to dance or at least bob your heads to the rhythm of the songs being played. To make your getaway even more special, ask your partner for a little dance while the sun slowly sets into the horizon.

Enjoy Other Free Facilities

Fitzroy Island also allows their guests to use their libraries and kids corner for free! You can also take a dip at the resort’s pool where you can cool down after having fun under the sun. If you’re in the mood for a good flick, they screen movies twice a day so don’t miss that!

More Fun Activities On A Budget

If you’re really on a tight budget but want to make the most of your stay at Fitzroy Island, there are more options to enjoy!

Hang out with the turtles that are being nursed at the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre for just $8.80 for you and $5.50 for your kids. This facility is dedicated to the protection and treatment of sick and injured turtles so they can be released back to the ocean where they truly belong. A trip to this center is a good way to teach the kids, especially adults, to take care of our environment and friendly neighbors from the wild.

Moreover, if you enjoyed your tour at the island and wish to stay for another day, you can pitch a tent at the Council Campground for only $35 a night for four people. Not bad because you get to enjoy the place’s shower block, beachfront BBQs and most importantly, the wide and star-sprinkled night sky.

You really don’t have to break the bank if you want a relaxing and memorable holiday. Many local and international tourists who have enjoyed Fitzroy Island can attest to that. Whether you’re with the family, wandering with friends, staying in with a special someone or travelling solo, Fitzroy Island is one of the ultimate destinations you should dream of.
