Sur, Oman boasts a rich history dating back to the 6th century. It was an important center for maritime trade and shipbuilding, with its famous dhow ships being used for trade across the Indian Ocean. In fact, Sur was an essential center for trade with East Africa. The dhows manufactured in the city traveled as far as China and were even used for pearl fishing.
Sur was also a center for producing frankincense, which the city traded throughout the ancient world. The city has seen many battles and changes in power over the centuries, with various rulers including the Persians, the Portuguese, and the Ottomans.
Today, Sur is a bustling city with a mix of old and new, known for its beautiful beaches and traditional architecture. I had the pleasure of exploring the city with my guides at Oman Travel back in 2022. I fell in love with it and can’t wait to share it with you. These are the top things to do in Sur, Oman!
As a seaport on the Arabian Sea, Sur is one of the best places in Oman to enjoy seafood. Among the city’s best seafood eateries is Al Hawash Restaurant, which looks like a beautiful traditional Omani house.
I highly recommend visiting the restaurant with a group of friends and ordering several items from the menu. Their succulent lobster stuffed with cheese is a winner, but it’s a bit spicy! I also recommend their fantastic kingfish, fried calamari, mussels, grouper, and veg biryani. You can’t go wrong with any of them!
Sur, Oman is famous for its prominent shipbuilding industry, and the city’s dhow boats are a significant part of the country’s maritime history. Sur is one of the best places to experience these traditional boats.
The dhow boats built in Sur are made using traditional techniques and have been used for fishing, transportation, and trading for centuries. These boats, made from teak wood, are hardy and durable as well as beautiful. Visitors can see these magnificent boats at local seaports and even take a ride on them to enjoy a unique Omani maritime experience!
Continuing the historical tour of Sur, Oman I highly recommend visiting Bilad Sur Castle. This historical landmark dates back to the 19th century and served as a residence for a local governor. Today, the castle is a museum that showcases the traditional lifestyle of the people of Sur.
The museum features exhibits on Omani architecture, traditional crafts, and the city’s expansive history. Visitors can explore the castle’s various rooms, including the reception hall, kitchens, and bedrooms. The castle’s strategic location on the coast also offers stunning views of the sea and the surrounding landscape.
Hawiyat Najm Sinkhole Park is one of the most popular natural attractions in Sur, Oman. This geological wonder formed thousands of years ago due to the collapse of an underground limestone cave.
The sinkhole is approximately 30 meters deep and contains crystal clear turquoise water, which creates a breathtaking contrast with the surrounding beige limestone walls. Visitors can swim and snorkel in the sinkhole, and the park also boasts picnic areas and walking trails. It’s a great place for adventure-minded travelers to explore!
