Haa is a tiny town resting at the very bottom of Haa Valley in western Bhutan. Located just west of Paro, it’s among Bhutan’s least-inhabited and least-visited areas. Off-limits to travelers until 2002, Haa is a hidden gem of sorts for travelers.
Dramatic hillsides and forest-covered mountains surround Haa Valley. The hillsides house terraces that grow crops like potatoes and chilies. Both crops are staples in the local cuisine. One local specialty is hoentay, a type of dumpling. It comes in steamed and fried variations and usually contains turnip leaves.
