Touring the Ancient Ovech Fortress, Bulgaria

David’s Been Here is touring all the top sites and best attractions in and around the Bulgarian city of Varna. In this short clip, David brings us 45 minutes outside the city to the small town of Provadia. Home to the colossal Ovech Fortress, this stone stronghold was used from the 3rd century all the way up to the 17th century by the Byzantines, Thracians, Romans Bulgarians and Turks. With some stunning views over the sprawling area below, there’s no wondering why this fortification played such a crucial role for nearly 1,000 years. For a picturesque and historic day trip from Varna, make the short drive out to the Ovech Fortress for another of Bulgarian’s amazing ancient attractions.

    Hi David —
I am writing a column on photography and video for travel writers for the International Food Wine and Travel Writers Association.
One our members posted a link to your site with the August 9 post of the castle.
I wonder if it might be possible at some point in the future when you are stateside to do a short interview about the art of video for travel writers.
I look forward to chatting with you then.
