Welcome to the Georgia hub at David’s Been Here! In July of 2021, I traveled to this incredible country at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. I was blown away by what I found. It’s located in an area of Eurasia called the Caucasus region. It’s bordered by Russia to the north and east, Armenia and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the west. I’d been dying to visit Georgia ever since my trip to Armenia back in 2019. I fell madly in love with that country within days of arriving there, and Georgia is no different. The people of the Caucasus region are known for their incredible warmth, friendliness, and hospitality, and they were all on full display during my eleven days on the ground

My life-altering road trip through Georgia began in its gorgeous historical capital, Tbilisi. It was there that I got my first taste of Georgian cuisine, which is quite diverse for such a relatively small country. After leaving Tbilisi, I began a week-long, in-depth road trip that took me deep into Kakheti (the Georgian wine country), as well as to Telavi, Kasbegi, Ateni, Gori, Kutaisi, Obcha, Ozurgeti, and finally, the city of Batumi on the Black Sea coast.

Along the way, I learned about the country’s rich history. From the introduction of Christianity by the Colchis and Iberia Kingdoms in the 4th century to the rise of the Kingdom of Georgia in the Middle Ages, I was fascinated every step of the way. I also learned about the times Georgia fell to neighboring conquerers including the Iranians, Mongols, and Ottoman Empire. I also got to get a further feel for the country’s past by visiting incredible historical sites, including fortresses and monasteries.

But it was my deep dive into Georgian cuisine that solidified the country as a top-tier but underrated travel destination. From the meaty fare and expertly made wines of Signagi and Kakheti to the fresh seafood and decadently cheesy Adjarian khachapuri (a freshly-baked boat-shaped bread filled with cheese and an egg yolk) I found in Batumi, I was in food heaven for a week and a half. Walnuts, fresh herbs, and local vegetables are common ingredients, and breads like puri and lavash are typically served with every meal.
