Welcome to the China hub at David’s Been Here! I first traveled to China back in 2015 with my father, Tomas. On that trip, we started in the coastal city of Shanghai before traveling on to the capital, Beijing. We also visited one of China’s most historical cities, Xi’an.
It was on that trip that I got to visit the iconic Great Wall of China! We also saw the Forbidden City and the Tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang. I also fell in love with Chinese cuisine on that trip. The sweet and fluffy char siu bao (barbecued pork buns) I ate nearly every morning blew my mind. I also loved trying the spicy, sweet, and crispy jianbing on the streets of Shanghai.
My second trip to China came in March of 2019. The luxury car brand Renault hired me for a one-day job in Shanghai, and I built a trip around that one day. I explored more of Shanghai and also visited the cities of Suzhou and Hangzhou. Along the way, I also took an unforgettable day trip to Tongli, a beautiful ancient water town cut by canals and waterways.
China lies at the end of the famed Silk Road. As a result, Marco Polo famously visited the country in the 13th century. I got to learn more about him and China’s history on both trips. Of course, I visited ancient gardens, elaborate temples, and stunning landmarks along the way. I also had the opportunity to explore the diverse wonders of Chinese cuisine. From the tongue-combusting spice level of Szechwan cuisine to the equally flavorful and savory Yunnan cuisine, I was in food heaven!
I have barely scratched the surface of this alluring Asian country. There are so many regions of the country I haven’t even touched. There are also history and cultures I would love to dive further into. I can’t wait to explore them so I can share them with you here.
Tibet is one region of China I’m hoping to visit on a future trip. Tibet travel has been on my list for a long time. I’m excited to see the beautiful mountains and visit famous temples. I also really want to try Tibetan food, like tsampa, yak butter tea, and Tibetan noodles. These dishes reflect daily life on the high plateau. Exploring the local food and culture there will be an amazing experience, and I can’t wait to share it with you.
Below are my China city guides and travel episodes. If you prefer, you can also navigate by city on the right. I hope my guides and videos help you plan your next Chinese adventure!
