Belgrade is a cosmopolitan city with no shortage of delicious restaurants. While traditional Serbian cuisine is hearty, tasty, and relatively cheap, the food culture is changing in Serbia’s capital.
There are several places that could be considered as one of the best modern restaurants in Belgrade, but here we’ve narrowed it down to our top 4 picks. These restaurants are the embodiment of the modern foodie culture that is sweeping through Balkan countries like Serbia. Forget traditional, these restaurants have modern ambiance and exciting flavors.
Iguana
With a minimalistic interior dominated by white, black and gray, overlooking the Sava River and energized by live jazz, Iguana is the perfect place for romantic dates, business meetings, or dinner with friends. The restaurant features a split level dining area as well as outdoor seating. To the left, a live jazz act livens the mood. To the right, bartenders are busy behind the long bar counter. The vibe at Iguana is classy and elegant and the Serbian wine selection is excellent! The menu abounds with international fusion foods infused with Japanese flavor like sesame, soy, and miso glaze, which makes it one of the best modern restaurants in Belgrade. Specialties of the house include grilled tuna with avocado salsa, steak with wasabi, and their super-famous chocolate soufflé. Iguana is open daily for lunch and dinner. *Reservations required. Homa
Homa took Belgrade by surprise with its gourmet tasting menus, minimalist decor, and exotic ingredients. However, the surprise is more than appreciated, and so is the restaurant, which introduces both locals and tourists of Belgrade to a new gastronomic concept. Yes, the prices are a bit spicy and it’s possible you’ve never heard of some of the ingredients mentioned in the menu, but the flavors and the elegant ambiance make it worth the money. The stark ambiance is created by white walls and plainly set tables. In the summer, diners can sit and mingle outside beneath hanging lanterns. The food is the real star here; an ever-changing mix of local and international ingredients served up in 8 unforgettable courses. When had South American and Thai specialties, the most appreciated dishes being lamb skewers, duck confit and braised pork neck. *Reservations required.
Radost House
One of the few vegetarian restaurants in Belgrade, or in Serbia for that matter, is Radost Fina Kuhinjica (known simply as Radost House). It may be challenging to find the place since there is no sign outside to keep it from becoming overrun with tourists, but once you do you’ll be rewarded with amazing food and an inviting atmosphere of vintage furnishings and eclectic decor. Radost House isn’t your average vegetarian restaurant. Rather, the kitchen elevates the ingredients with a wide range of cooking techniques and exotic spices. Forget the cardboard veggie burgers you’ve had in the past. The ones here are juicy, hearty, and cooked to perfection. The menu at Radost House is heavily influenced by Thai and Indian gastronomy. Our favorite dishes include the Thai soup, quesadillas, Indian dahl, and the hearty daily salads. Ask for a selection of dips with your bread as you browse the menu. We love that the menu is always changing to incorporate seasonal veggies. *Reservations required.
Comunale
Comunale Caffe e Cucina is a sleek, minimalist Italian cafe/restaurant that shares the same owners of the elegant Iguana restaurant. Located along the same stretch of Sava River as its sister restaurants, Comunale’s menu couldn’t be more different. Here, barbecue is king. Most Italian restaurants focus on pasta and pizza, but Comunale pays tribute to Italy’s grilling traditions. Portions here are family-style (BIG), making it the perfect brunch or lunch stop while touring Belgrade. Pasta lovers won’t be disappointed either. The menu has several classic plates (risotto, gnocchi, focaccia, and pizza). Homemade sausage and fine cuts of meat make Comunale a mecca for carnivores. The views aren’t shabby either – grab a table on the terrace and watch the boats go by as you enjoy your meal. Inside, long tables and large bright windows give it a modern, yet inviting feeling.
